In-person Chinese Brush Painting Classes

Spanish Village’s Village Art and Education Foundation offers in-person Chinese brush painting classes.

Location: Spanish Village Art Center, Balboa Park (open-air space, enter from Studio 17)

*In case of rain, the class will be held indoors in Gallery 21, Spanish Village.

 

Sunday

Time: 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Fee: $48 per class

Age: 14 and up, adults

(Children under 14 are only accepted if accompanied by an adult and paid for two)

Maximum students per class: 20

No refunds are given 48 hours before the class begins.

Q & A:

 

What subjects will new students learn in the class?

 

Prior experience is not required for new students. The class is taught from the basic Chinese brush painting techniques such as plum blossoms, bamboo, orchids, and daisy flowers. After completing the four basic painting subjects, you’ll enter the Mixed Level Class and start learning different subjects. You’ll sign up for the classes one at a time.

 

For purchasing art supplies, please check the information at the bottom of this page. You’ll need a large goat-hair brush, a small weasel-hair brush, and a detail brush. You’ll also need indigo, yellow, crimson lake, cadmium red, magenta, and burnt sienna. Opaque colors include cobalt, brilliant green, white, and black ink. Absorbent rice paper is also required.
